Masfuni is a traditional Maldivian breakfast that will make anyone fall in love with it. In the Maldives, this
breakfast is eaten daily, even by those who do not eat fish.
The name Masfuni means fish and coconut (mas = fish, huni = coconut). It is a tuna dish made with fresh coconut,
onions, and lime.
Mas funi is eaten by hand with rosi (chapati).
Coconut should always be freshly shaved; dried coconut will not have the same flavor. It is best to buy whole
coconuts and shave them at home.
Maldivians sometimes add green ingredients such as collard greens (a cruciferous vegetable, a close relative of
kale) to mashfuni.
cut the red onion into small pieces, put them in a bowl, add salt and mix well with your hands.
Add tuna, coconut, chili pepper (if using) and lime juice to bowl.
Mix well. Do not let the tuna clumps get too big.
serve with roshi (chapati) or store-bought tortillas.
